Secretariat (March 30, 1970 to October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, who in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years and the ninth in history, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series, the Kentucky Derby, and the Belmont Stakes. Records that still stand today. In the Kentucky Derby he won by 2 1/2 lengths. He won the Preakness by 2 1/2 lengths and he won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. Secretariat was the son of Bold Ruler (a grandson of Nearco) out of Somethingroyal. He was foaled at Meadow Farm in Caroline County, Virginia. Like the equally famous horse Man o' War, Secretariat was a large chestnut colt and was given the same nickname, "Big Red."
Born in Los Angeles, raised in Orange County and residing in the City of Orange, I took art classes in school but didn't find time for formal training. Raising 3 children and working as a 9-1-1 Operator kept me super busy. . .maybe someday! The old saying 'Jack of all trades, master of none'. . .that's me. I don't have a particular 'style' and I envy the artist who does. For t-shirts, mugs, totes, etc., see my store at Zazzle. also at RedBubble for t-shirts and iPhone cases. Popular Prints: Guitars on the Wall, Guitars on a Rack and Arenal Volcano.

Thank you Kathy. How interesting to live next to a jocky during that era and learn first hand the stories. Love your story.

Arline, my neighbor Don Ross was a Jockey in his prime at the same time that Secretariat peaked with his Jockey Ron Turcotte. Don and Ron along with many others were all very good friends and spent allot of time traveling to same races, places, and parties. The stories we've heard are simply amazing! Don's mother-in-law owned allot of famous breading stock, and passed that along to Don and Darlene. When we became neighbors, they brought with them some of their prize retired animals, to which we drooled over....lol We also were given the pleasure of leasing a Grand daughter of Secretariat for about 5 years, which made us feel like we literally rode and cared for a small piece of history! Your painting is stunning! And thank you for the descriptive bio on Big Red! Wonderfully Done!
